Hello all, I'm Paul and I'm a retro bike fan :)

I've heard of this place several times, but never ventured in til today. I recently sold my 2007 Specialized FSR XC Pro and found myself bikeless. Until a few days ago. An old neighbour of mine asked me if I'd like an old GT Timberline he's had sitting out in all weathers for the last decade. Obviously I took it from him and have spent the last few days tarting the old girl up.

At the risk of causing offence to the purists, I decided not to restore her, rather opting for the usable choice and have bolted on un-OEM parts.

Off came the Exage stuff and on went Easton EA50 bars, a stem converter, Cinelli Vai 120mm road stem, lock grips, Acera front V-brakes and lever, rear Savage bmx u-brake with Acera lever and generic Selle Italia road saddle (after un-welding the seatpost from the seat tube at my work using brute force and an industrial vice).

Next to come off were the Exage gears. I decided to singlespeed her after noticing that she had horizontal dropouts. Now she's clean, silent and maintenance-free.

I did take her round some gentle local trails on Sunday, but I soon realised how soft and used to my old full susser I've become and ordered a set of 70mm Manitou SX forks from ePrey.

I have loads of stage by stage photos to upload if I've not caused too much offence in here :)

cheers

Pauly

Welcome.

Pic's always welcome - suggest you put something up in the reader-bikes section, either pre-1997 or 1998 onwards as appropriate.

Putting modern bits on isn't crime - If it is, there will be many on here looking worried, myself included.

Thanks for the welcome, guys.

I'll upload some photos when i get home tonight. Once I work out the age of the bike, I'll post in the appropriate thread. :)

She had canti front and caliper rear Shimano Exage 500 brakes (with the front on the left and rear on the right side of the bar - would that signify she was imported?), if that's any clue?

Also the most hideous 3 foot long green quill stem I ever saw!

The guy I got her from reckons he received her in part payment for work he did for someone else about 11 or 12 years ago and she's sat outside ever since.

welcome dude.

a boke rescued with modern bits is better than a dead bike

If the Melrose location is Scotland then stick yer heid roond the door into MacRetro and say hello, you'd be very welcome

@velomaniac - I'll do just that, ta. I'm in melrose, roxburghshire.

@cornholio - lol I've already spent a 3 figure sum on the old timberline just 'cleaning it up' :)
