Hi again, its been a while (Stumpjumper 1993)

Sparrow

Devout Dirtbag
Hi folks, as I say in the title, it has been a while since I had much to do with retro-bikes. But I have been gifted this rather tasty little number, and well, an old bloke needs an excuse to spend his winter weekends (and all of his spare ££) in the shed working on a toy, rather than doing anything grown-up or sensible around the house....

Here then is the poor neglected wee beast:

DSCN0511_zpsunri8zo2.jpg

As you can see, it looks like someone has attacked it with a 12 bore, but my frame restorer man says this is common with old Speshes, due to them not "keying" the surface before coating, so that tiny chips become huge craters...

I have decided to go for a full re-coat, API bikes http://www.apibikes.com/ are very handily local, and though not cheap, he used to be a Specialized specialist, so can be trusted to get the colours right.
Now I will need some advice.. Handlebars, stem and seatpost.. I don't need to be religiously "period correct", but equally, I don't want it to look stupid, and most of all don't want to but throwing ££ at Fleabay, for parts which wont fit! Any and all advice welcome.
For instance, I think that the bars are probably original, but they have AFAICS, been cut and are quite narrow.
The stem is a bit nasty, and though I could strip and repaint it, I would prefer a silver one? I have bought a couple of Spesh saddles off that there auctions, and I am waiting to see what they are like..
What sort of stem should I be looking for? Size etc ?
I notice that Moderator and Guv'nor "John" memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=6 is having a clearout,

Hi,

images are in the flickr link at the top of my sale thread. Is the frame 1" or 1 1/8" . Have some 1" quill stems to list soon.

The bars would be fine, plain black specialized ones.

Thanks John, IDK about the headset/steerer dims, nor how to measure, but I'll get on to that today..

Nice project there Sparrow. I see that you have researched API resprays. Have you contacted them? I looked them up last year and emailed and called but no reply from them so assumed that they are not trading?
Before I saw your post, I have put a post up for recommendations on powdercoaters in Essex. Maybe of interest to you depending on your plans.

Hi Henne! Yes I have spoken to him (Andy Palmer). I get the impression that he is perhaps nowadays part-time or semi-retired or possibly has other full-time interests.. His website shows colour charts from year 2000 (with equally 'retro' prices!). OTOH, he seemed very kind and happy to do the job. He quoted £185.00 all in, which considering it is two-tone blended metallics, I guess is fine.. I have done literally NO research on this subj, it is just that he is or was a Spesh spesh, and lives little more than a vigorous nine-iron from where I live. There are many powder-coat firms in Essex, and of course elsewhere (There is on E-Bay, one in the Midlands quoting £50.00 + postage), I am sure that they are fine, but API has expertise with bicycles, and "postage" is free, also I can meet and talk to him.

Nice find! An early M2 which were rubbish at holding any kind of paint. Google Ned Overends M2 and you will see half the paint missing! :D Not to be a party pooper, but please check carefully for cracks in the frame. Early ones did crack and had one crack myself recently. Good luck with the build!

Check around the chainstay bridge in my experience with slightly later ones...
