Right, i've successfully replaced the MCUs on my Proflex 856 with coil springs (thanks for your help), now the clean-up begins...

I've stripped the frame and fork, ready for cleaning and re-greasing parts but I can't for the life of me get the melted elastomer off the frame!

I've tried degreaser and turps (mineral turpentine) but neither went so far as to soften the baked on crap.

I've managed to scrape some of the chunkier bits off with my thumb nail and have tried a scraper blade but it just takes theclear coat off the paint job.

Can anyone suggest another solvent that will eat the elastomer residue but leave the paint in-tact?

try Shovelon - he might have some ideas - he lives in a hot climate (where they melt) - where we live they go hard!! Plus he has about 8 Proflexes so has quite a bit of experience!!

Mine just peeled off. Other than heat I would not know. The clear coat is also becoming aged I would think, so you are going to loose it anyway.

About 3 o'clock this morning I had an epiphany. It was heat that put the MCUs on the frame... it should be heat that takes it off!

Just tried out the theory and it works ( after a fashion). After 2-3 minutes of locally applied heat with my Wife's squillion-dollar hair dryer I am able to 'wipe' the MCU residue off the frame. It takes quite a bit of elbow grease but it eventually leaves a nice clean finish!

Thanks for your suggestions guys. I just noticed your post sholevon. Right on the money.

Cheers.
