Help identifying this frame.

My friends Dad got given this frame (saved it from a visit to the tip) a few months ago, he had the intentions of building it up, and then using it on trails etc... But he just never got round to it, so he's said if I want I can buy it off him.

I've been interested in getting a mountain bike for a while, so it could be a good opportunity to get a cheap but decent frame as a starting point.

Problem is, we've no idea what year it is, or the size, or the value.

So just hoping someone on here can identify the year, and then I can have a gander round for some bits and bobs for it and see what the total cost would roughly be.

Sorry it's not the greatest picture in the world either.

That'd be a 2000 Specialized Rockhopper A1 FS. Size is measured either from the centre of the bottom bracket (about which the crank rotates) to the top of the tube where the seatpost enters the frame or to the junction with the top tube. I'd guess 17" centre to top. Value is about £50 tops in my opinion, I'd be happy paying £30 assuming no damage to the remains. Looks like you'll need tyres, tubes, saddle, seatpost and a rear gear shifter + grips. That will set you back quite a bit.

I bought a mint Carrera bike, 3 years old for £36 on eBay a few weeks back, so this might not be the cheapest way to get into mtbs!

I'm currently selling my jump bike, but if that doesn't sell, I can use the wheels, tyres, grips, seat and most of the bits off it to put into this frame, which is what I was going to look at doing, as the money from the jump bike was only going to fund a Carrera Banshee X or similar :)

Bikepedia was down when I looked, but take a look later and you might find the seatpost size there.

Out of curiosity, what would you say is a good stepping stone onto the trailing/mtb scene?

Well, you don't get much for your money these days so a decent second-hand bike makes sense. If you intend to ride in all weathers then discs are a good idea. I bought the Carrera as a winter hack with the intent of swapping the wheels to discs.

Building a high-end bike from parts often gives real savings, but with low-end bikes you're better off buying a complete one and upgrading as funds allow.

I could essentially spend a lot, but I don't really see much point in doing for my first real trail bike.
Got any suggestions to keep an eye out on eBay for? Was looking at the Carrera Banshee X, looks like a really nice bike, but around £500 or so second hand still lol.
