Devout Dirtbag
Hello to all again. I am looking for info on a bike i have just bought fom a auction i wont name now. ;-) . Its a bit of a wierd one with side bracketed cable guides and a wierd seat post tube. Its built up with what im assuming are 95 to 97 parts. The bikes very light for its age and has mostly old xt parts etc. The frames in good nick but has been hand painted in purple so its going to my powder coaters next week when ive stripped it. Hope the pics throw some light on the bike. Thanks in advacne for any help

Looks like you've gone and landed yourself a very desirable bike (or frame at least!).

That's looks like a genuine Funk. Do a search for them on here and it should shed some light on it.

If you're going to get it stripped and repainted, make sure you do it justice!!!

Great find :)

Ps. I don't mean to be a vulture, but I'll have first dibs on the forks if you decide to sell them ;)

Yup, it's an early Funk. Very nice bike, used to own one many, many years ago. What I would recommend you do before you get it resprayed is to get a cable stop welded on where that clamp-on stop is. The original front mech had a cable stop on it and the cable clamped near the BB but they are now next to impossible to find..

Good score you got there! If you find dark green paint under that purple then it could even be my old one![/quote]

got it

Like a fool i thought the Funk (which i had never heard of) on the frame was just someones idea to make it look better. I should to be honest have searched that first before posting here. I have searched and mine does not have welded cable guides on the top bar but has pop riveted ones which are a bit chunky. Ill spend a few hours now and look into it. Not sure what im doing with it yet beacuse as you can see from my spare bedroom i have a few projects. Ill put some more pics and info of what parts are on the bike in the next few days. Its looking like my GT lts might become my second ride soon.

Funk

Its a Funk. Thanks for the input guys. Ive had a bit of a look over it just now as i only bought it yesterday and its full old xt setup including the back wheel but the front wheel has a chitty £10der on it. The paintowrk now appears to be original i think. (oh and its dark blue not purple id say although im 50 so eyes are not what they used to be. Chit what do i do with it? ideas are much appreciated. Are the parts up to scratch that are on it as i dont want to do a full rebuild with costing in mind. the seat post is u/s by the way. it fits but has been cut down to about 7" Might split it for some trade on other wanted parts for other projects. Does anyone know what year these are when they have pop riveted cable guides? Thanks.

   WOW what a great find. Did you get it for a good price? Would love to bag something like that. Have started to desire an estay since I saw a beautiful alpinestars Ti mega at the peaks ride.

Im ashamed to say to be honest (well not ashamed more happy now) The auction i go to there are quite a few Cycle buyers (its a general auction based in a farm auction) And i started going for parts for my new age type bikes eg 2005 onwards but they over bid me all the time. But they know nothing about retro so if i see a old bike i just buy it. Ive had 3 gt lts 1 saracen traverse hydrotech all original ish. and a raleigh record john players special edition in gold.

Looks like a well loved bike that has been upgraded with newer kit over the years, the XT is too new for that frame. The XT is good enough, but it looks like LX v-brakes and levers?

The XT is a good set of kit to keep or use on your GT, but I would personally get period correct kit on that bike and maybe tidy up the paint or respray. If you go down the other route and sell then the frame forks and stem are worth selling as a job lot (they are all 1 1/4"), you could see a few hundred out of those.

There's a good number of people after one of these so you won't be short of good money offers if you haven't the time or inclination to restore or would rather pounds in your pocket!

Either way, lovely bike. I thought mine was fantastic.
