HEEEEEEEEEEELP....deadish laptop/net book thingy

Windows doesn't recognise the SLAX download...won't open it. Oh for the love of Bacchus just give me spanners and grease...I know how they work!

If it's being like that press whatever your bootup screen tells you to enter the boot menu ( maybe f2 ) and switch the boot order to start with the usb instead of the harddrive . The boot comes before the operating system starts to load , you just need to tell it not to choose windows but instead the drive stuck in the usb .

Silly question but needs to be asked , have you made a bootable stick with slax on it and not just stuck a slax iso on the drive ? It needs to be made bootable otherwise it just thinks its carrying a file .

I have downloaded the USB Installer...I guess this is to download Linus onto a stick...which I have. But there are a whole heap of distributions? Which one should I download.
I might have to come back to this when I have more time.

Again, thanks for your help guys

As you're a regular, PM your address, and I'll send you Linux on a usb drive, complete and resplendent with instructions.

If all else fails I've got a USB caddy for hooking up the drive exsternally to another machine - so you can copy files across before rebuilding / re-installing everything which _may_ wipe your data.

Would need a host machine though as well - to do the copies to / big USB stick.

Also got a USB FDD with a variety of boot disk from win 3.11 to xp, good for checking at which point things fail etc and may be enough to then link the machine to another to copy to a usb stick etc.

Am just north of Cardiff, so not to far from sunny Penarth ;-)
