Do I have to get a similar headset or can I take those out and replace it with a regular threadless h/set??

Is it a threaded headset?

If so, they're usually a tight fit, pressed in with a headset press if done propery, hammered in with a mallet if done by me.

No.. threadless. .

I have no problem getting those out or refitting new ones, it's if there are any restrictions on what I put back in I'm not sure about ;)

Are they worn? If not, regrease, and put on new bearings.

If they are, replace the headset. They are an inteference fit; use a screwdriver to bash them out from the inside, starting on one side, then the other. You will also need to remove the fork crown.

This is something where it is really better to have someone show you the job the first time you do it, especially if your frame is aluminium. It's nothing to be scared of, but if you get it wrong you can wreck the frame.

I want to put a King headset back in. . . is that possible with those cup doodahs??

**edit** frame is a steel '98 GT LTS

no, those will come out and be replaced with the king cups, or whatever headset you replace with

Splendid. . . just needed to know there wasn't a 'thing' about frames with these things from the factory that meant that's all they could wear. .

I suppose a steerer from a minging set of forks would suffice to bash these out??

I'll be the first to say it:

A nice king headset in a nasty steel lts frame?

Steel LTSs were never supplied with anything better than cheapy finishing kit.

Yeah bash it out with whatever. Be sure to work your way around the head tube so it doesn't go wonky and stretch the head tube.
