Has anybody sold records thru eBay?

I've got a small collection of vinyl albums (about 30 or 40) and I'm not sure that my local secondhand record shop is buying vinyl -- I think he's more "CDs and DVDs" nowadays.

Anyway, I'm slowly replacing these albums with their CD equivalents, which leaves me wondering what to do with the records.

They're in good condition and vinyl still seems to be traded on eBay, so that appeared to be the way to go...

But records are large, flimsy and easily damaged. I know there are plenty of packing materials on eBay precisely for this task -- http://business.shop.ebay.co.uk/Packing ... 86.c0.m282 -- but all the same, it still seems risky and I fear that I'm going to go to a lot of trouble, only to finish up giving out a lot of refunds.

Has anybody else sold records thru eBay? Was it pretty straightforward? Or should I just give them all to the charity shop?

When you click on links to various merchants on this site and make a purchase, this can result in this site earning a commission. Affiliate programs and affiliations include, but are not limited to, the eBay Partner Network.
A friend of mine does a lot of e-bay record trading.
He uses special packaging which seems to travel well (between the US and the Netherlands).
He is not on this board, but if you send me your e-mail by PM, I will pass him the message.

Cheers,

Pierre

Depends on what the records are aswell. There is a collectors market for some stuff and other things are virtually worthless. What you got?

TBH I often prefer to listen to vinyl rather than CDs these days. CDs have a covenience factor for sure - but particularly on earlier CDs, the mastering might have been rushed through and the results pretty poor compared to a proper vinyl mastering made a the time of the original release. Also a lot depends on the quality of the vinyl itself, or your turntable.

I'd suggest you ask around - search for the same records on Ebay and see what they go for.

But vinyl is on its way back. Most of the stuff I've bought recently was also available on vinyl. Some of the vinyls I bought in the mid 90s when vinyl was on its way out, are worth a fortune today - Pulp - Different Class, Oasis - Definitely Maybe. Even some of my U2 vinyl stuff from that time is scarcer then stuff from very early in their career.

The first CD's have also started showing signs of degregation. It seems their life span is limited.

I sold off my record collection over the last year vis e-bay, with no problems. Did send a lot of 80s and 90s Metal off to the US and Eastern europe.

I've bought alot of vinyl off ePay with no real issues to speak off, you can purchase dedicated carboard vinyl 'sleeve's' to ehlp protect them.

I'll be interested if you have anything particularly rock'n'roll ?!

They found this problem quite early on an changed the way they were manufactured so anything post 1990 should be OK for a bit longer.....

Well, I can find out what the sellers are asking -- but I'm not sure whether people are actually paying that! :)

Well, that's encouraging. It might now be worth giving the secondhand record shop a call, just in case... ;)

Just out of interest TGR, did you run auctions or did you sell them as Buy-It-Now sales? Also, how did you package the records? By using envelopes and stiffeners or by using dedicated cardboard mailers?

Cheers KIS! :) I'm not sure how much I can say without John telling me off for opening a sales thread in the Off Topic forum, but from memory I've got Aerosmith, ZZ Top, Led Zep, The Cure, The Police. Once I know the P&P costs more accurately, I can put them in the 'Non-bike sales' forum complete with correct prices. 8)

Do specialised search and make sure the box for "show completed auctions" is ticked. Or something like that. Can't remember the exact terms.

Gives a pretty good idea of what people are willing to pay.
