GT STS Frame ebay.co.uk

i didnt realise these frames cost so much! erm gadro, could you pm a history of gt full sus bikes?

Ive got my eye on this, but im unsure as to how to refurb the carbon?... just a fresh layer of clear coat?

If you intend going to the trouble of making it shine word of advice - Putting clear coat on Carbon Fibre is not a job for beginners :(

Because the clear coat will also have an 'edge' where the thermoplastic is bonded to the aluminium you can also get water damage. The surface of carbon fibre will I am told also have pin holes which will be a nightmare in getting a high gloss finish.

Come to think of it I'm not even sure if these frames are in fact clear coated the shine may actually come from the thermoplastic material that the carbon fibre is embedded in. These are quite 'raw' looking frames especially when compared to high gloss automotive parts. If it was me I would seriously consider paying that little bit more and getting the job done professionally.

I've always wondered about the surface shine on Thermoplastic and just emailed GT to see if they can give me an answer. Get back to you in about 6 months

I have a very good friend at EMC (east midlands composites) that should be capable, I think.

Here's the email I sent GT

"...........In relation to the STS Thermoplastic frames that GT produced in the late 90's could you please answer the following

IS THE SURFACE OF THE CARBON FIBRE CLEAR COATED OR DOES THE 'SHINE' COME FROM THE THERMOPLASTIC MATERIAL ITSELF?

I would really appreciate if you could provide any information and have included a couple of pics of some of the STS models I currently own.

Thanks

Andy"

Just had a reply back from 'Hank' at GT Cycles and here it is

I have heartd so much about these and have never seen one. I would love to open your pics but i dont think it would be a good idea. as i was looking at a consumer email friday and opend his attachmant and got a PC virus. But thank you for keeping one of the more rare GT frames alive and well. As these were made before our bankrupcy I dont have any real solid info on them bit if i were to guess i would say its clear coated.

Thank you for your email.

Hank

There you go GT awesome customer relations yet again :( So it looks like as Hanks guess is saying they are Clear Coated. Spell check would be nice too

I cant believe hes never seen one?... makes me feel old.

I remember looking at GT brochures when I was 16 and watching Steve Peat on TV/DVDs wishing I could own an LTS/STS... I now have one in the garage and nobody knows what it is!!
