grease and degreaser

hey guys,

just wondering if I am ok with the products I have or if I should be using something different.

I have Hope Sh1t shifter as a degreaser and a massive tub of copper slip as my grease.

Hope stuff is ok but seems to struggle with the really greasy bits that I want to strip back and start again with.

is copper slip ok as an all round grease as I have about 5 litres of it

Your grease is only suitable for some applications. There are product guides on most manufacturers' sites.

i use:

Castrol LM grease to grease my bits

citrus degreaser from ASDA (weldite stuff) to get the crap off.

a microfibre cloth.

bit of loctite on stuff i don't want rattling loose (go to their website to find out which grade is best for your needs)

I could keep you here all day.....

But Weldtite degreaser SPRAY - the concentrated stuff that you can use on disc rotors - sprayed on a cloth to clean down the chain, pulleys, sprockets and chainrings, before it gets so gunky that you have to revert more extreme methods..... (you could use another quick-evaporating solvent)

Sh.t shifter is a bike wash, not a degreaser as such. I use Muc-off bike wash, Pedros Green Fizz or something similar. It all seems one of a muchness TBH.

For grease I use.....
An anti-slip compound or blue loctite for threads, depending on application.
For bearings, Weldtite PTFE grease or similar mostly. For stuff I want lower friction on and that isn't too exposed to filth, Pace grease.

For polishing - Muc-Off Miracle shine

Chain lube - Muc-Off C3

Moving parts other than chain and bearings, GT85.

Copperslip is not a grease.
It's an anti seize compound. good for seatposts & crank tapers.

I also use Castrol LM for headsets & the like.

Those tubs of castrol LM last decades too if you're using them just for your bikes that is

Any tips other than above for really greasy/filthy parts? Got a drivetrain so covered I want to just put it soaking in a bucket in the morning and come back after work. Diesel ok? Need something that wont damage it after a 9 hour soaking.

In a shallow bath of white spirit, 10 minutes scrubbing will do more than 9 hours soaking.
I used to commute 20 miles a day through London on my Cannondale and the drivetrain received a full monthly stripdown, de-grease and re-grease.
Now my road bike gets the same treatment every 3 months or so.
Always found it best to do the cassette and chain off the bike, so KMC/SRAM Powerlinks are useful, as is a chain whip & cassette remover.

Don't forget to include the jockey wheels in the bath, and give the chainrings a thorough wipe down with a spirited rag.

After drying, I re-grease my chain with Finish Line Krytech Wax Lubricant, and pack the jockey wheel bearings with Finish Line Teflon Grease (also used as an assembly lubricant on most other parts of the bike except the BB).

I use:

Gunk, or similar engine degreaser for degreasing, brush or spray it on, work it in with an old paint brush and rinse it off with hot water.

Copaslip for seat posts, threads, brake pivots etc.

Weldite or similar teflon grease for bearings, you can buy it with a small grease gun: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=5958

I have a can of white teflon spray grease: http://shop.defenderbits.co.uk/white-grease-with-ptfe---sg85-6-p.asp, handy for spraying in trigger shifters and cable outers.

Finish Line Cross Country Wet Lubricant for chains.
