1956 Claud Butler with 5 speed hub gear
Price £350 (without the saddle)
One of the last of the original Claud Butlers built at the Clapham works in June 1956 just before the firm's closure.
The Reynolds 531 frameset is in superb condition with elegant pencil seat stays and lovely round-oval-round chain stays. The lug design is for the Aspirant model and the original head badge is in great condition. There are braze-ons for all cables specific to the 5 speed hub gears. It has had a professional repaint in black with gold lug lining and original style gold script transfers. The frame shows little signs of use since restoration and measures 24in c-t.
It is equipped with the somewhat eccentric 5 speed Sturmey Archer hub gear controlled by two classic style chrome trigger levers. The right hand one gives low, med and high gears while the left lever adds an extra low and an extra high ratio. I have arranged the gearing to provide a really low bottom gear, capable of getting up steep gradients when loaded for touring.
The componentry is a varied mix chosen to harmonise with the character of the machine:
GB bars and stem with cotton twill bar tape
Weinmann 500/730 brakes of the earlier type all metal construction
Weinmann 27in Alesa rims with Exeltoo (French) large flange front hub and new amber wall tyres
Aluminium seat pin (sorry, the Swallow saddle is not included)
Generic Alloy chainset on Campagnolo bottom bracket
Looking for £350 without the saddle.
I may be able to help with delivery as I regularly travel between Brighton and Berwick upon Tweed, but bike is in Oxfordshire.
