Retro Newbie
Hi! Today i got this retro giant, i think its a giant cadex 1, full xtr with manitou easton e9 fork. I'm interested how much is it worth, and how much could it worth when restaurated. Is this a bike that is worth restaurating, i heard the frame will break, just the matter of time.
sry for my bad english i'm from croatia.
Greets, Marko.

Re:

Hi Marko,

That's a nice bike!
Personally, I think it is definitely worth to revamp it and have fun riding it (not too hard..).
The argument that 'it is a matter of time before the frame breaks' shouldn't hold you back: that goes for a lot of retro frames (quite independent of the material), just as long as you keep in mind -and respect- that it is an aged frame while riding it should keep you safe (no guarantees though..!) :).

What state are the Manitou 3 forks in: do they still go up and down?

Take the bike apart, clean, lube and replace all required bits, put some knobbly tyres on and enjoy the ride, spring is coming 8)!

thanks for your answer, the fork is not blocked but it works very poor, but i will buy a new kit and restaurate it, i have already started with cleaning, bought new brake pads, brake and shifter cables, grips... with time ill get it in a good shape, if nothing else i'll have some good fun with restaurating it ;)

its not the retrobike thing to do but strip it and sell the xtr and forks, its dependant on condition, but they are more of a commodity so they will find their value whatever it is. i guess depends how much hassle it will be to clean up and fix up.

the frame on its own should make 75 easy, you could say it will inevitably break but so will any frame, these are a durable as any. other similar designs had issues with de-bonding but giant got it well sorted

if you want to get the most value thats the way to go, and if you sold it complete it would likely end up as a cheap xtr donor anyway.

but if you keep it, someone on here had a super nicely tarted up one, sanded off the paint and polished the lugs, it looked the biz. i always think they kind of need a pace fork tho, even if its not period correct.

subjective isnt it. ive seen several sell on ebay for 70+ over the last couple of years because i have an ebay alert for cadex. i dunno where the other guy got his price from. maybe it was an offer? ill buy it for 35. of course that is assuming its not cracked or damaged.

frames usually go for proportionally more than as a bike, which is pretty normal for retro bikes, but there is an additional premium on cmf's because of the bolt on dropouts, ppl like to get custom track ends machined and use them single speed. thats what i'd do, but would also look great with some sram x9/x0 gears

the other thing with cmfs, although this is the top of the range, it isnt the model you would want, which is the original one that wasnt painted and looked like the road bike, with multicouloured graphics
