Giant ATX 990

Retro Newbie
A friend has given me his Giant ATX990 to restore for him. I have tried to find out the spec & have found a similar bike on Bikepedia, however this ATX 990 differs in that it has Girvin Elite X-link forks at the front & Noleen shox fitted (front & rear) rather than the Rock shock items on the standard 990. The colour of the main front frame triangle is yellow, and it has NORBA national DH Champ badging on it, with a blueish purple rear triangle with "championship geometry" badging on it.

Componentry is :

Gripshift SRT800 shifters with LX chainset & XT rear mech.

XT V brakes & levers

"Paul" anodised red front hub on mavic 217 rims

Looks like shimano deore rear hub, again on mavic 217 rims.

Handle bar is a club roost anodised red riser bar.

I am trying to establish how much of the componentry is original & what the original spec should be, so that I can restore it to its former glory for my friend.

Any help appreciated.

Looks like this is what you're looking for perhaps....

My mates dad had one, very cool at the time with Steve Geall and the rest of Animal Giant team riding them, I wanted it bad!!!

Oops, just reread the first line of your post! The bike I remember definitely had the purpley blue swingarm and linkage, so I'm sure this is correct year/original spec. Sounds like it's had some decent money spent on it though...

Hey there, thanks for the info.
Pretty sure its a 97 model though, probably built to celebrate J.Tomac winning Downhill comp that year (did a search on JT to see what he was riding & winning back then).

Really intrigued by the Girvin forks & the XT brakes as Bikepedia makes no mention of these for the 990 model (identifies RS front forks & Magura hydraulic rim brakes). Are these upgrades or original equipment? Anyone know?

No worries pal, as I remember the bike had v brakes and gold Judy XC forks, can't remember girvin forks being OE on anything other than proflex bikes, but I could be wrong!

Put somes pics up!!

I raced an ATX990 in the '96 season so its definately a '96 bike.

I only received the frameset and Judys through my sponsorship so I can't help too much with the OE spec of components.

All I can say is that the geometry was rubbish, and there wasn't nearly enough travel at the rear! I may have the original spring and plate set knocking around somewhere.

Hi there I have just built a J.T DH Edition not quite finished yet just need to change the forks but i do remember the originals. a friend of mine bought one brand new from a place called newbury cycles when we was 17, about 10 and a half years ago. Yellow and purple frame, Rockshox Coupe deluxe rear shock (only place i found mine was chainreactioncycles), Roxkshox Judy XC's, Red J.T Magura HS33 brakes and im sure had LX and XT chain set on it.

Hi, i know this thread has been 'dead' a while but just thought i'd add something to it for anyone else who goes looking for info like i have..... I have recently purchased a Tomac Edition ATX 990 in the polished frame with a red rear end, it has Rockshox Judy DHO'S on it (triple clamp) with around 100mm travel and 20mm bolt through axle, Rockshox coupe deluxe rear shock, Magura Raceline yellow HS33 brakes. I'm fitting Gripshift SRT 600 8 spd shifters, Tioga DL2001 low rise downhill bars, Tioga Revolver black cranks (can't believe i found some- EBAY!!!!), XTR 900 series mech's, and have some fairly good Tioga Pscho II tyres so far but will be looking for some mavic 231 rims to build up with an original Hope TI Glide hub i have for the rear. Will need to find a 20mm non disc front hub, flite saddle and a Tioga DL2001 seatpost if i can get one in the right size. Not sure of the exact spec for the small parts but pretty happy with most of the fitted parts so far. Ideally would like to have a Tioga Disc Drive too but i have owned 2 in the last few years and both gone pop. Still have the pro version built up and fitted although it is so buckled it barely goes through the frame but saves having the rear end dragging on the floor for now and still looks pimp as f**k when i get it out the garage to stare at now and then  Still got to finish getting the frame polished up nicely but need time to devote to it as it's a lengthy process as i'm sure anyone who has polished an alloy frame will know if you do it right :? Will hopefully post some pics if i get it done anytime soon.....

HAPPY TRAILS AND DON'T FORGET, THERE'S NO SUCH THING AS HAVING TOO MANY BIKES..... JUST NOT ENOUGH TIME TO RIDE THEM ALL!!!!
