... dodgy looking bikes on Gumtree - ie blatantly nicked... any tips on what to do? Has anyone ever tried to take this up with the local police?

It's driving me to despair... these cocky little runts copying spec sheers, spelling everything incorrectly, making up reasons for sale etc. and not having the brains to hide their skinny legs with rolled up shell suit bottoms and scally trainers.

Anyone who lives in a big city as I do and uses Gumtree for bargain (or should I say 'bargin') bike shopping will know exactly what I'm talking about! :evil: I'd post links here but I'm wary of potential comebacks :? the internet is quite a small place these days.

Maybe it is worth setting up a sticky here for suspected stolen bikes, one of the mods acting as 'the forum' can contact the seller (with anonimity and therefore no comebacks) and sus the provenace of the bike.

I have called the police in the past about a car on ebay, nothing happended but when I contacted ebay they said they would look into it, the ad disappeared shortly after.

Tough one, I suspect the unsatisfactory answer is that if the scrotes want to steal stuff to convert into drugs then someone will not be able to ignore a sufficiently sized bargin. :(

As someone who once had a bike 'mugged' from him there is no fate too bad for bike theives. :twisted:
 
I know Gumtree is a moderated site, but not to what extent this would protect potential buyers - they claim to be attempting to work with they powers that be to stop dodgy ads - maybe they should be my first port of call.

In London, this website posts an image of all recently advertised bikes (off Gumtree & eBay) to help you spot your bike, could do with this round our way!

I don't think it is practical for mods from here to go around acting as some kind of investigative team.

It is beholden on all of us to suss out what exactly we are buying.

If you have something you think might be knock off, what would you do?

If you buy a 'bargain' and on reflection think it might be stolen, what would you do?

I am sure I have bought bikes that were knock off, and I have had bikes stolen.

If I bought a bike and saw someone looking for it, with good evidence of ownership, there is NO question I would contact them and return it, at my expense.

If possible I would then go after whoever sold it to me.

It is all about the magic K.

There are a number of other forums that have a 'dodgy, scammers, stolen' section that allows forum users to;

Find beloved bikes that have been nicked, post photographs and give details of where and when they thieving buggers took them. :evil: The more eyes that are about the more chance we can track things down.

forewarn potential buyers of dodgy dealings, stolen, fake bikes, etc

dissuade such persons from openly dealing on sites such as ebay

Most of us 'enjoy' picking up on the dodgy Ads posted in the ebay marketplace section. Many members often inundate the 'seller' with mind blowing questions and also report items to ebay, etc.

We already have a lot of this information on here (e.g. ebay Bad Traders) but it is scattered across the many sections of the Forum. Would be good to see all such posts in a dedicated section of the forum, maybe John and the Mods could give this some consideration :?:
