I'm thinking about having a go at building a wheel, always wanted to try for some reason.

Quick question: are front and rear rims different?

Cheers.

I'd say no. remember the drive side on the rear is shorter spokes. Others will point you in the right direction

In most cases front and rear rims are identical, although Ritchey for example have made rims with offset spoke holes to offset the effect of wheel dish on rear wheels.

Anyway, the drive side spokes on rear wheels are normally about 1-2mm shorter than on the non drive side. Front wheels normally have the same length spokes on both sides.
Disc wheels occasionally throw up some changes to this for front wheels.

taa, had same question.

I have a cheap an cheerful wheel that the LBS but a steel rim on when I
asked them to replace a bent alloy one(doh). Was toying with replacing
with a spare front alloy rim.

Look at that; midnight, and two replies already 8)

Many thanks guys, have gone ahead and bought the rim I was looking at (eBay).

Will update in due course :D
