I thought mech band clamps only came in 28.6,31.8 and 34.9? I have a 30mm one in front of me. Any light to be shed folks?

ps the above figures were of the top of my head and may be wrong

Me too! Is it an old roadie mech, or off something special?

Nah its a regular XT FD-M732, took a punt on it on ebay, NOS too.

The standard frame tube sizes are all inch fractions - 1 1/8" (28.6mm), 1 1/4" (31.8mm), 1 3/8" (34.9mm), etc.

I know that old French road bikes often used metric tube diameters that were close equivalents to the Imperial sizes - 25mm, 28mm, etc. Just a guess, but I wonder if there were early French mountain bikes that had a 30mm seat tube. I know that Shimano were still supplying French standard parts for the French market fairly late in the day: I've got a French-threaded UN71 cartridge bottom bracket in a box somewhere.

Should add that the 30.0 size is stamped on the inside of the band.

i once had a 30.0 M732 too but havent seen it on any other model yet. it worked on a 31.8mm seat tube with a longer bolt cause the clamp is flexible enough. no idea what they were meant for.
