Front derailleur not shifting - help

Not quite sure where maintenance/help related stuff goes so I'll post it here.

Somehow while adjusting my front dérailleur I've managed to make it stop shifting - the lever's not clicking, and it still moves the derailleur and chain, but whenever it goes up to the larger chainring, it just falls back down to the small one again. What am I doing wrong?

I tried to go to my LBS with it to ask there - the guy wouldn't even spare a few minutes to look at it, the shop was full of customers' bikes waiting to have things done to them and said he wouldn't be able to do anything for at least a week. He also wouldn't let me leave the bike with him.
I won't be going there again, the last time I went in for some work to be done on a singlespeed (bb, chainset and bar tape), he said to leave the bike with him and he'd get back to me with a price, it'd be ready early the next week (it was Thursday). Two weeks later the bike was still sitting in the shop, nothing had been done to it and I hadn't heard anything either. Sent my dad in to see what was going on, proprietor said he was going to the wholesaler's the next day to price up parts. The next morning about 11am, I get a phone call with a price for the work - a correctly sized second hand aluminium chainset had conventiently been found in the shop. At 2:30pm the same day all the work was done (plus the brake cable had been replaced FOC) and I went to pick it up. Yes, the work was to a good standard, but I'm a bit dubious of the proprietor's attitude to jobs.

We might need some photo's, are we talking downtube shifters? It could just be the retaining screw for the lever needs tightening so the lever doesn't slip :)

Re:

I've had this with early 80s down shifters… Don't know about bar mounted shifters, but if it's the traditional type just tighten the cable slightly to increase the tension - maybe a quarter turn at a time on the shifter. That should do the trick.
