French J&P Frame - Excell - Acier + Composit Tubing

Hi,

I just picked up this J&P frame from Ebay in France, anyone know anything about the frame builder at all?

Made from rare Excell - Acier + Composit tubing. I have a couple of bikes made from Excell tubing - Podium (Pegoretti Luigino) & Mexico 1 series (Haral Chambery). Never come across this version with the carbon insert inside the steel tubes? Anyone have anymore info would be appreciated.

Excell was French tubing. I first became aware of it in the very late 1980s. They were notable for using super high strength, heat treated steels to produce very thin wall, plain gauge tubesets. They even marketed a carbon reinforced, brazeable tubeset.

I had only one experience with Excel composite tubing. Mike Mulholland was a Canadian builder of Cyclops bicycles out of Toronto in the 70s and 80s. He used the pg Excel in some of his framesets but when I was in his shop one day he showed me the Excel composite tubes. They were very thin pg steel with a carbon tube in the center portion of the steel tube which could be clearly seen when holding the tube up to the light. This left the end portions suitable for mitering and brazing and kept the carbon out of the heat affected zone to allow brazing. The carbon reinforcement acted as butting which stiffened what would otherwise was a flexible pg tube.
