i've gone and broken my own rule. just bought the wife a frence car. golf cabrio to citroen saxo. she's livid!

12 months mot but engine seized paid 250 for it and new engine is being delivered saturday for £100

anyone know their vtr's? anything i should be chesking before i let her loose in it? am i now a chav?

to correct the balance and annoy her even more i've need offered a swap for her cab for a mk3 golf gti for me to drive!

she'll tear strips off me if i do that

No you're not a chav.

Yeah right!! Chav!!

Drive behind it and check the rear geometry hasn't taken a bash.

Passive rear steering makes them look a bit drunk anyways but if it excessively crab walks then it could need a new stub axles after a boy racer meets curb sideways incident. Likewise the front suspension will have hit a few curbs in all likelihood so check her bush(es) and arms out.

Not much leccy stuff to go wrong, no multiplexing and clever control modules that are the bane of newer French voitures.

Otherwise they are so basic and it's all easy tried and tested stuff since the AX. :D

Keep it original and you'll avoid the worst of the chavvy associations.

The original VTR wheels are still some of the best looking original equipment alloys out there.

Be aware that on long journeys the slightly-to-the-right pedal offset can cause back ache.

If she plays hell, get her golf back, strip the VTR out and use it as a superb, very cheap and expendable track day car.

cheers for that. it does look standard inside and out (agree with you on the wheel front. will only replace if i can get some bbs rs split rims for it)

i heard they handle really well. no need ofr a second track car though (already have a stripped and caged mk2 golf)

Yes, they handle superbly - sort of like a (slightly) less manic 205GTi 1.6.

My wife had one when we first got together, I loved it. now she has a Polo diesel sport which is a bit vanilla in comparison.

Oh, check the radiator. Her's used to fail every three years or so. Other than that they seem pretty robust mechanically.

it has had oul in the water (or other way round) so think radiator is destined for the bin.

i say it hasnt been owned by a boy racer, but..... just found out it has a "performance" air filter fitted. it is a k and n cone filter on the end of the cold air feed which leads into the airbox where there is the standard air filter!

guess which one of those two filters i'll be flogging on ebay!
