For fun, today, I had a weighing session

unfortunately don't have some regina, zeus, or galli, even everest ones

so its mostly froggy stuff  when they were influential on the roadbike scene - period now not completely gone, but we are outsiders now

The light alloy Maillard is clearly ahead at 156 g for a 5V ( body weighed at 80 g)
It is sometimes dubbed zicral but the cogs don't have a reputation for durability

The 5V cyclo 72 stands at 294 g
The 5V atom at 327g
The 6V Maillard in steel but with bigger cogs stands at 433g - if I take out the 6th cog 413g

Hello - I just had a search for the weight of a Campag alloy freewheel which is quoted as 150g!
Going on the price it made it comes out at approx 80p per gram - it seems the maillard ones are a much better bet for most of us.

Blimey that takes me back a bit.....I remember the reps bringing in alloy / titanium blocks (oops freewheels) and I was amazed at how light they were compared to my favourite Regina Oro :)

IIRC they retailed at about £69 (the titanio) and given a Campag Chainset was £59 that was a lot of money, we never stocked them as it would have been dead money as no-one would have bought one.

Might you know who actually used the Ti / alloy blocks? Would they have been routinely fitted to pro team bikes or maybe just for mountain stages or perhaps just the elite riders in a team? I`d also like to know how long the teeth might have lasted.

possibly but very rarely seen in decent condition :?

here a seemingly very rare everest alu from another french forum member but dunno the weight

and here a few ads from Maillard and their pro users - last is steel freewheel and alloy cogs - the alloy freewheel at 80 g was probably not very durable so not much used by pros !
