Free hub and number of speeds

Hi I not sure I understand these new fangled free hub thingies but I have a nice Raleigh Team Replica from 84 that I am restoring and the rear spacing is 130mm. Now I do have a set of nice Campy hubs with some as new MA3's on. The free hub currently fitted runs a 9 speed block but as I want to use a Campag 980 set up I don't think it will handle more than 7 speed block. Is this possible on this free hub or do I change it for another, this I don't mind as the current one feels clunky anyway. Failing this does any one know if I can get a 130 32 hole hub that takes a 6 or 7 speed screw on.
Thanks in advance for any advice

Re:

A Campag 9sp freehub will only take 9/10/11 speed cassettes as the spline pattern is different to their earlier cassette hubs, unlike Shimano which from experience will accommodate 7sp and upwards.

eBay should prove fruitful in finding some retro 130mm OLN hubs suitable for screw-on blocks of all speeds - Sachs New Success/Rival 7000 and Mavic 501s are worth tracking down. Sachs have similar bearings to Mavic 501s but can be had for less as they don't seem to be such a prestige marque.

For brand-new screw-on hubs I've a feeling Miche might still make them whilst another budget alternative via Spa Cycles is the Zenith:

For a tad more cash you're looking at the Velo Orange family. Only available in large-flange though:

Money no object, go down the Royce route. Not cheap but you do get what you pay for.

Campag is pretty clunky at the best of times........its why we like it :)

if the 980 rear mech will only travel 7 then revel in a 14 speed bike :D

I think the 980 should have the range to handle the 9 speed cassette, after all it was made for 126 oln and this is only 4mm wider. Just make sure to have a 9 speed chain and you are good. Any thread on hub can be respaced from 126 to 130 with ease, 2mm of spacers each side, you may need a longer axle however.

Re:

Thanks Guys for your advice.
I'll try the 980 on my 8 speed modern bike if it covers it I'm well happy if not I shall search out a Mavic rear for screw on
Many regards
David
