I've a lovely Bob Telfer gate in 853 Pro Team tubing with carbon forks. I'd love to fit chromed swanky forks from way back when to improve it's looks but can't find anything with a one inch threaded steerer that's 11 inches long. Would it be possible to buy a lovely old fork off Ebay and get a new, much longer steerer fitted? Also, would the new steerer's fitting arse up the chrome?

I've emailed a copy of this to Gary at Argos.

Blimey that's a long steerer. I think you are going to have some made or think about something modern from Brick Lane if they have any in that length.

Having them made is about £150 for the forks and £100 for the chrome so not cheap, I have an 80's TT frame that needs forks with a long steerer as I'm tall and its a nightmare.

Re:

If you have a complete new steerer fitted at the crown, then yes, it will mess the chrome.

However, I had a local frame builder convert some forks from threaded to threadless (when threadless first became fashion) and it was done by extending the steerer. He basically cut the steerer half way, inserted a sleeve and then put an extension on top. As it is away from the crown, this may not affect chrome (but I cant be sure on this)

A certain ginger retro hound of our acquaintance has been known to sleeve and extend steerers to achieve his goals....

Re:

Who is the Dutch guy that posts,he often has large bikes. There are going to be lots of long forks over there. His name will come to me later message him and see if he can help.

I wouldn't put cheap ebay cro-mo forks on an 853 frame. I'm with Hamster - get a frame builder to make what you want to look how you want.
