If you're 1x, 8 and 9 speed steps are too large for comfort if touring.
10 is your minimum, and you need to avoid road, it won't handle an adequate rear sprocket.
Unless you live in Holland or east anglia obvs.

Although he's often offroad, he rode up to hay with us 100km tarmac last year.

Got 1x on my minivelo. 52 with an 8 speed 11/34 in the rear, if you live in a flat area you might want to go even bigger, tall gears are needed one those tiny wheels. It's very nimble, mine runs 1.75's which I find plenty for gravel and still decent speed on the on-road sections.

I've seen Microshift Acolyte 8sp, Advent 9sp and Shimano Zee 10sp recommended for 20" wheels.. albeit, i often see fancy vintage Dura-Ace short cage on old 16" wheel Panasonic Traincle.

I use 20" wheels, and I use a modern 10 speed 105 short cage. I friction shift it.
