Engineers?

Was wondering how many people on here come from an engineering background?
Just occured to me that we all lust after frames made from exotic, lightweight materials with perfect welds and beautifully cnc machined components, and this made me wonder how many of us actually work with said materials on a daily basis.
I myself trained as an aircraft fitter when I left school and have worked in engineering aver since.
Currently work as a service engineer on medical imaging equipment for Siemens.
Will never make me rich but I never dread going to work either

to start off with i trained as electronics (btec onc 1&2)realised this wasnt me so after this i did the following courses at college over a space of 12 years ......catering 760 city and g,security inc body guarding,cad and cam 70 sommut(cant remmememememember),electrical installation 760 part 1 and 2,spent a few years bumming around(as full time students do)then i went and studied furniture design and pre 1900 and modern day upholstery making some strange tables on the way...notably my surfboard table and shark stretcher i like so much for a year or so at norwich city collage.after this i spent 3 years teetering on the verge of being very dead thanks to some blood clots and the odd pulmanary embolisem(all cos of a fubared ankle opo at addenbrookes).....what do i do for a living now......I TEACH KIDS KERBCRAFT,STEP ON IT AND CYCLING PROFFICIENCY .....absolutly the best job ever......i just like having and looking at bikes that people have lavished themselves on.......works of art and all that.

The term engineer is very over used these days. I was a telecomms engineer for many years in the military and then in civilian circles specialising in exchanges and fiber optics. I retraded to a Nuclear Operations Technician a few years back. This is when I realised what real engineering was, when I saw the complexity of the plant and the scale of engineering solutions used to keep it within specification and ultimately producing power. Our engineers have spent years and years in university and training, but get tarred with the same brush as a 'sky tv engineer' or a 'telecomms engineer'. I would'nt address myself as an engineer anymore as I now know i'm not the real thing, tradesman yes, engineer no.

But on the other hand, some so called engineers come out of university and would not know how to use a spanner.

I'm a mechanical & marine engineer. (Got the degree to prove it.)

I design green buildings for a living.....when I'm not doing research on energy efficient refurbishment of the existing UK housing stock.

Go figure? :?

Medical devices development engineer here, I've pretty much been medical technologies based since leaving Uni, but did do a 2 year stint designing uber flashy staircases and other architectual fixtures & fittings for the rich and famous.

An odd mix but both have been fun.

Trained as a mechanical engineer (machinist) only to go into inspection then calibration and then as fitter. Worst mistake i ever made going anywhere near it. Then wound up doing purchasing before getting out of the industry and i am never going back, would work in tesco first. Would like to work in a bike shop!

Yep, I am an engineer. Not someone who brings a new microwave when yours breaks. Not someone who screws an aeriel to the wall.
Agree with above - engineer now is meaningless.

Instead I say I design bits of car
At least most people understand that

So , in the long run, a good thing then! Could save a lot of trouble.
