Considering you can get an Advent Vega for a little over £100, don't bother with the cheap ones, the Advent has a decent community supporting it as it had the package but no the software out of the box.

Doesn't the vega get slated for having crap viewing angles on the screen?

Depends what you intend to do with it, if you intend to use it on the sofa as a device to surf and mail it won't be a problem, as a device far watching videos away from home with it static on a table or stand it could be an issue.
I remember the review stated my Xperia Play had a screen that wasn't bright enough and the viewing angles weren't great, which actually is a complete load of bollocks.
I would try the Advent in PC world of course to see if it's as bad as the reviewers make out and if you could live with it. My gut feeling is that if it was really that bad the community wouldn't have bothered with the software as it would have been turd polishing and they usually don't bother with duff hardware.

Cheers folks all great stuff Playbook looks interesting.

I thought this, then remembered the HP one, sad to say that a lack of software support (of which the Playbook may have as RIM may drop it) puts me off and points me back at Android.

There's a HP touchpad in the household - I keep it stock, but many run Android on them.

Truth be told, it's had plenty of use, although personally I prefer my Android tab.

My recommendation for the playbook is based on me almost buying one in the post-Christmas sales, and only didn't because I didn't really need one and I'd been so happy with my Android tab.

If I had around £150 to spend on a tablet, then it's definitely what I'd go for. I often think the apps / market thing is overplayed. Most people buying a budget tablet will do a bit of surfing, bit of email, maybe watch the odd video or listen to some music. A playbook, or hp touchpad, or plenty of other decent, yet budget tabs will be up for that.

Ideally I'm after something for a bit of surfing and for my daughter to play with, she's only 3 but gets on great with the Ipad and wifes phone. So nothing too expensive.

Are you somebody who tinkers with technology and gadgets (ie does the thought / sound of installing custom roms put you off)?

If the 7" screen doesn't put you off, get the playbook - I was very tempted, and it'd be superfluous to my needs.

If you have lots of need for apps, or changing apps, and want to tinker, then go for an Android tab - but if not, the playbook has a lovely screen, performs really well, and I suspect will do everyhing you want out of the box.

had my advent for about 6 months now, great wee thing- the viewing angle thing is a def negative but it really is not a big issue and prob the only one. You do need to mod it if you want marketplace but as the only game on mine is angry birds I have never bothered. Big keypad too ZZ so not to many typos. Great value for money.
