Early Konas - my yellow Lava Dome with splattered paint-job

Does anyone know what year my early yellow Lava Dome is with the hand-splattered paint work? Did they make these as early as 1988 or is it more like a 1990 as the chap I bought if off quoted?

iirc thats a 1988/89 frame, there was a fire mountain that had the same pattern but in blue splatter,i think

That's what I'm thinking - I have it down more as an '89 which would be nice making it a pre-'90s Kona. I think the Cinder Cone was white with red and black splatter from this eara - there is a 17" f&f on ebay this week but too small for me.

Does anyone know when Kona started selling these early production bikes was it 86,87,88,89?

Mbtr got this info...

The Bicycle Group's (parent company to Kona) initial prorduct line was "Cascade" mountain bikes (in addition to distributing Brodie & Merlin).

Cascade bikes were designed by Joe Murray, and morphed into (in '87 - '88) Kona after Jacob took a trip to the islands. Hmmm.

As far as I know, 1988. I have a pistachio/yellow spatter Explosif from that year and the white/red spatter Cindercones were around at the same time.
I've taken the liberty of correcting the WB a bit in your photo BTW to get a better idea of the colour.

It appears to have canti (not U brake) studs fitted, so is '89 or '90.

According to Kona, their first year was 1988. I believe Heathy attributes his Fire Mountain to 1988 and this is the earliest pic I have of a Kona. Does anybody have any views on how it fits into this chronology?

This Cinder Cone that sold for £74 yesterday was attributed to 1989, although the frame and all the parts taken off it were identical to the bike in the 1990 catalogue. I suppose it could be that the 1989 and 90 ranges were the same, but the text in the catalogue implies that there were changes for 1990.

As far as the Lava Dome is concerned, although you can’t always rely on Kona catalogues, the 1990 bike was shown as Orange and the only one that year without spatter.

So my guess is that the creamy yellow bike here is a 1989.

Well, that Fire Mountain (top photo) is, in my opinion, 1988.

It has the U brake fitted , not canti's (on the rear, that is).
