My son has outgrown his 20" wheel bike so needs something larger. I asked him if he'd like to build his own bike and the answer was a definite yes, so I started looking for something suitable. Racin'snake had this little GT up for sale, I thought I'd missed out but then he got back to me and the deal was done :) I don't think we'll get it up to Ant's JMC replica specialized, but I think it will turn out OK...

We spent yesterday evening stripping the whole thing down, my lad did most of the work (with some help!). Next on the list is a good clean, polish, touch up the paint work, and start building again. We'll probably be going 1x9 to lighten things up a little, and keep it simple. A V brake will go on the front, not really needed as he's not heavy, but I think they're easier to pull at the lever, and the levers themselves are smaller so a better fit for his hands.

For now, a few pics of the bike as it arrived (colour is a vivid fluo orange, but in the pics it appears more red):

Re: Another small one - early 90's GT Pantera

I love these little 24" bikes. I'm keeping an eye out for another one for my 8 year old daughter.

It's taken a while, but we finished this at the weekend :) My 9 year old has done a fair bit of the building himself and is well pleased with himself and the bike! There are still a few tweaks to be done - hubs need a proper going over, headset needs changing, and maybe the brake levers too (went with the old canti on the front instead of a V in the end, levers with a longer blade will probably work better for him). We went for a ride on it yesterday and it fits him great - he liked the ride a lot and is already much faster than on his old bike :)

And the paint isn't blotchy, it's just the effect of sun and shade on the fluo orange

Ok, so 6 years later, looks like the images have been photobucketed (but I can still see them), and this has now been updated and passed down to my youngest who is now 10. Swapped out the chainset to a Paul Milnes Cycles 155mm with a 34t NW ring, basic Shimano 9 speed mech and shifter to keep things simple. First ride this afternoon and he loves it!
