my daughter had 2 dwarf russian hamsters
one was really placid ,the other one was mental , they were in seperate
cages ,the mental one broke out of it's cage by pulling the bars on the top of the cage apart
then it broke into the other cage and bit the head off the other hamster
chuck bloody norris of the hamster world

+1 for Rats, very loyal, very playful and you can take them places as they will generally stay on you/ in your pockets when they are somewhere strange.

Guinea pigs rule...they chatter and churp, popcorn, swim in the bath, so friendly brilliant.

Cleaning out the cage can be a chore though, kids are mean't to do it...guess who end's up with the job ^^

I like guinea peegs but Wife really doesn't at all (and with the dogs and ferrets, it's not a safe place for small furry prey  )

Rats are very cool, never really liked the greasy coat and the strong urine smell though..

Anyone who likes pet rats should spend some time around a couple of ferrets..

Well, I love my Roborovski Hamster. There used to be two but fatty died in the summer. Speedy is still going strong and is relatively entertaining; she climbs her cage, hangs upside down, likes to run around the living room in her ball and she'll sit in my hand (although she invariably tries to chew it too).

Speedy is on the right:

Hamsters make excellent pets IMO. Had about half a dozen during my childhood and they were all tamed very easily and good fun. Trouble is people buy them as a pet, often for young children, they squeeze it, it bites them (bloody hard) and that's it. Everybody gives up on it and it spend it's two miserable years stuck in its cage.

The key is to buy a young one and handle it as often as possible. Adult ones that have been left too long untamed at the pet shop should be avoided unless you're super confident and got tough skin.
