Dwarf Hamsters

Hamsters are, imo, one of the worst animals to buy as a pet (that are widely available)..

Used to not mind the Russian variety but still...

If anyone ever came into my shop I would try to avert their gaze to something more suitable.
If that didn't work, the minion putting a pair of gardening gloves on to get the thing out of the cage was quite a useful backup

My mother bought them last year as pets for 3 my kids 1 hamster each we went for Russian Dwarf as the shop said they will live together in same cage and get on better with each other better than any other breed of hamster, this is true despite the odd need to seperate them for a time out if one becomes overly aggressive but they do nothing nada not a thing and the only time you every really see them is when they have a little fight and need to seperate them or cleaning the cage out.

Boring boring boring and when they are gone i will never buy another hamster ever for christ sake fish are more entertaining at least you can see them swimming around in a tank

If you want short-lived and VERY entertaining.. chipmunks are the shizzle..
Not really easily handled though..

For money no object, sugar gliders are pretty awesome and can be VERY friendly..

If you can handle the smell, ferrets are amazing (if I'd have got ferrets before the dogs, I wouldn't have got the dogs)

Chinchillas are pretty cool too.. no natural smell, fairly easily handled, don't breed like mad..

Have kept both. Be careful with sexing of Chipmonks as i found 2 boys fight to the death.

And if you upset your Chinchilla then they will pee at you aiming for the eyes.

20 years in the pet trade and have bred both (chins more than chipmunks)..
Reputable shop should be able to sex the chipmunks for you..

Have been pee'd at by a chin, just the one, and had nearly 20 running around at one point - kept them at home for probably 10 years (not any more)
You'd have to be pretty close the pee-hole to be shot in the eye.. got me in the hand..

Wont ask what you have to do to get them to pee at you lol, my brother had chins for a while till he moved and the new place was to small for the cage so he gave them to his missus uncle to have he never had a complaint, at least they wasnt boring, he now has a lizard instead. not sure what i would replace these with when they gone, do want a new dog when i eventually move house though torn between getting another Cocker Spaniel or a German Shepherd had a spaniel for the last 9-10 year and couldnt ask for a dog with a better temperament used to have a GS as a kid and was gutted when it went always wanted another one.

The pee'ing is just a defence response.
I've probably had 100+ pass through my doors and only 1 of them ever did it, and even then it was only once... and he was just a grumpy young man.

Spaniel vs GSD.... personally the Spaniel, especially if there's kids about. I'd steer clear of any herding breed around kids..

If I ever wiped the slate clean (dogwise) I'd probably get something like a Bichon..
Eminently trainable, kids could manage it and a heck of a lot of fun.

Rats, cant beat them........well you can or at least try too if you have them but didn't buy them

Seriously though, cheap, intelligent, friendly, easy to look after and often with real character :D
