disc vs canti vs Vs vs magura

So what's your favorite brake and why?

Am considering a frame resto with disc conversion on my roberts (don't shoot). Have only ever ridden with cantis and maguras, so curious to see how you all get along with these and how you rate them in relation to the other brake options in terms of performance, weight, ease of maintenance, other aspects I didn't think of (retro cred is not topping the list of priorities on this)

Cheers, Giel

Hydraulic discs.

The feel at the lever.
The power.
Modulation.
The choice of rims and keeping them perfect.
Choice of discs style wise.
Disc size changes for even more power.

Downside weight, but I can live with that.

xtr vs are plenty powerful but magura even more so...only thing is when your rims wear out it eqauls a wheel rebuild......discs=new disc.......

but saying that I had formula discs first gen c1996 and they were really nice....then had avid juicy carbon that looked nice but where utter trash

Even weight is not that much of an issue if you've got a bit of cash to spend. This idea that "disc brakes are heavy" is a bit of a myth.

A full XTR 'V' brake set up with Gore cables running on Mavic 717 rims is going to weigh in at 1400 grams.

Magura Martas front and rear on Mavic 717 disc rims weigh 1420g.

If braking performance and low weight are important, there really is no reason to choose anything other than disc brakes... if you've got the cash!

(written with a total disregard for 'retro-cred')

Magura disc brakes are brilliant - Feel, modulation, power.

XTR M950 V brakes are also excellent but as above rim wear can be troublesome.

Really loving my M900 cantis at the moment - supurb but in the dry only!

For sheer power it has to be hydraulic discs, also they have good feel and modulation, everlasting rims etc etc, although ease of setup and maintainance can vary from one manufacturer to another (my Avid Juicy 3's worked well but needed seting up well)

Magura's and V's would be a close 2nd, they have their place in MTB land still.

Canti's are "retro", and actually do work rather well, but on "retro" bikes.

I no longer own a bike with discs and rely on V's and canti's to stop my retro rides, but if I bought a more modern bike then it would have to have discs (probably because frames these days no longer have the posts for V's or cantis  )

No experience of cantis or magura rim brakes but i'll have to go with discs. I have a set of avid arch rivals on my sunn and they're great, but they need adjusting more than i'd like and if I ride in anything other than dry conditions. (remember i'm from scotland) their performance nosedives.

In the dry I've had XTR V's stop as well as old Hope XC-4s but...
If you want to ride in all weathers go for discs.

Hydraulic discs definitely the most powerful.
Never used maguras, but had V's (LX) on a recent retro build and I have to say they weren't far behind the discs in terms of stopping power. Rim wear is a potential issue though.

Gone back to cantis on current retro builds and have to say they don't have the same stopping power. However, my OCD means I appreciate their symmetrical looks and the fact that they are more period correct. We didn't complain about them back then - we just planned our stopping earlier!
Not sure I've seen any brakes to match XTR M900 cantis aesthetically. So why did I sell mine on here!????!

On your Roberts?
The Horsehoe seat stays will eliminate any frame flex, so with ceramic rims and Swissstop pads, you should be fine with V brakes!
