I'm going for a Deore DX build on a 93 Clockwork - would you go for the thumbies or the rapid fire/brake levers combo?

Any opinions?

Got both and I'm undecided.... :(

:D

Re:

The ST M075 DX Rapidfire Plus shifters were only around in 1993 in the last year that Deore DX was in the Shimano groupset line up.
For that reason they are slightly more rare than any MT-62 components which were around from 1989 - 1992.

The DX RF Plus are slightly different in use to more modern equivalent shifters in that the lever throw is much shorter. But they are reliable and accurate if the internals aren't allowed to get all gunked up with dirty old grease.
I had MO75 shifters on my 1993 Univega when I last did Mountain Mayhem as a solo rider. They worked perfectly.

So for a 1993 bike, my preference would be the Rapidfire Plus shifters, because they are completely period correct and they work very well.

I normally prefer thumbshifters on any bike where the period correct alternative is the push-push type Rapidfire shifters.

If they are gummed up at all it is literally as easy and spraying the inside of them out with WD-40 and they will perk right back up. The old grease just gets super gummy after all the years.....
