DBR Axis TT -- What to do?

Ch3rryGh0st

Retro Newbie
Hi all, new on the boards, and new back to cycling after a (way too) long lay off.

My current bike is my DBR Axis TT which is over 10 years old now, and in the next few months I'm looking to replace it with something new and shiny; not sure exactly what, yet, though, as it's more of an urge for something new, rather than an attraction to a particular bike.

The DBR is still a lovely bike, with XT and Judy SLs, and has served me perfectly, with only the tyres and tubes being replaced since I bought it, so I'm not really looking to retire it off at this stage, but as I'm looking for another hardtail, I'm wondering whether I'll actually ever go back to the Axis?

Presumably all you guys with multiple bikes do have favourites, so how often do you actually ride the 2nd, 3rd or 4th bike? Do you keep them more for sentimental purposes than anything more practical?

Cheers,

Andy

Hi, and welcome to the site.

The DBR is a sweet bike, and from what you've said, a good spec. There are a few DBR nuts on here; Jango, MadCowKev and Tallpaul, they'll all be requesting pics I'm sure

Regarding multiple bikes, some are garage queens, some get used regularly, its all personal choice. I personally have a 2007 GT Avalanche as my main bike, my 1996 RTS as fair weather and Retrobike meeting bike, 1990's Pennine roadbike for turbo training duties and an 1996 LTS (arriving today, hopefully) as, well I haven't made my mind up yet!

There are plenty of guys on here that use all there bikes daily though. ededwards, orange71, MadCowKev....I know all theirs are always covered in mud. So, keep the DBR, buy more and get dirty again!!

Now, off to the For Sale forum with you

I – for one – work on a rotational basis between my bikes. That said I do have faves (I can be a bit fickle) and at the moment the RC200 is receiving most of my riding attention. I suspect the Chance will take centre stage once it's finished :D

…but then I'll feel guilty for neglecting the others :( I'll be afraid to enter the garage lest the others look at me in that way (like an ignored kitten).

Seriously though, there's something about riding your old bike on a trail you've ridden loads on your new bike – it seems more real somehow. Perhaps that's modern suspension etc numbing the experience all our old bone-shakers offer us.

I'd keep the Axis, 'cause I'll guarantee you that you'll miss it in a few years.

Agree with your comment on the trails. I found that on Monday night when riding my local loop on the RTS, it was like a different trail!

(and at least I know its not just me worrying that my old bike will get grumpy for not being taken out.....but it shouldn't moan though, it gets all the money thrown at it!)

Thanks Pickle, and hello to you, too.

I'd spotted those other DBRs on here, especially as Tallpaul isn't very far from me (I'm in Cambs).

I'll get some pics of mine sorted once I can find the charger for my camera :)

Crayons, I already feel guilty about even considering replacing the DBR, and as I said, I still love it, and the way it rides, so I think I'll be taking both yours and Pickle's advice and keeping it (her?), and getting dirty with her as often as any new bike(s) that might arrive.

My guilt would be eased somewhat, I think, if I was after a new FS bike, something very different to the Axis, but I just don't feel the love for those. Truth is, I don't think I'd even be thinking about another bike if the Axis had disc mounts...

Oh, and Crayons, noted the Fat Chance in your sig -- love those bikes!

Finally, I've never been even been tempted to cheat on Her Indoors, but this is how I imagine it feels...is that normal?

Cambridgeshire too. This area is becoming the focal point for DBR titanium owners

Well, i've just sold a 2007 hardtail as it had fallen down the pecking order. I was picking up a Kona or the DBR to ride instead of it and decided the money it was worth was better spent on more old Konas!

Oh and we need pics of your DBR!

Yeah, I'm in St Neots, and at the moment I'm mostly riding from there up to and around Grafham Water and then home :)

I'll get some pics of the DBR sorted very soon, although she's in need of a bit of cleaning up, and there are some stickers on the frame (Hope, Rock Shox, etc.) that I should remove, too -- what can I say, I was young(ish), and I thought they looked 'cool'

Your DBR is beautiful looking.

I'm wondering whether I'll actually ever go back to the Axis?

You will.......I've beeen there and done that......modern bikes have come and gone over the years but the Axis has lived on 8)

As you say, the only thing it lacks are disc mounts, although these are hardly essential for riding around Cambridgshire, I've got xt cantis on mine and they are perfectly adequate unless I'm riding in Wales or the Peaks and even then I'm likely on a RetroRide so the modern bike still stays at home unridden

Let's see some pics then........

pics and welcome to the cambs massive innit!

My GT has been with me from new and is now semi retired.

The Specialized is undergoing a light restoration and does a good job of conveying me to the pub and back.

The sooper sexy Airborne Titanium is just a pimped up show off

the bike I currently ride the most is a 1984 Motobecane Jubilee Sport road bike with Campagnolo Record parts and Delta brakes, all found at my local tip (I'm notorious on this forum for my interesting tip finds  )

so, borrow something super new and see if you actually like it - sometimes new over old can be a big disapointment if you've just laid out £1k on a shiney paperweight

Did somebody mention a DBR Axis TT :?:

Welcome aboard mate, although your credit card may just regret you ever finding this place :!:
