Dave Marsh (for anyone that doesn't know) used to build top end frames for Raleigh/Carlton back in t'day before setting up his own shop in Maltby near Rotherham S Yorks called the universal Cycle Centre as well as having some quality kit for us Retro Bikers he also has some very special machines in there which once belonged to the like's of Beryl Burton, Tommy Goodwin, Chris Boardman, and Keith Lambert to name a few (well the one's I can remember  ). Lets say the place is half shop half museum and worth a visit for any Retro Biker :D .

More to follow…

Good to hear he's still going - used to visit the shop in the 80's - still have a pair of Campy / open 4 cd wheels he built, which are still going strong!

… and so

My story starts with an ebay purchase of a 653 f/f from ebay it wasn't the best of conditions and as the bidding was ending on 2 o'clock sunday 4th August 2013 the date of the first Prudential RideLondon-Surrey 100 (in which I took part unofficially and completed on my then 600 ultegra equipped Harry Perry). Checked in at 5 to 2 and by 5 past 2 pay now was done and it was mine for peanuts  . Unfortunately I don't have a full picture of the frame just these 2

I arranged to pick it up on the Monday night and after a quck inspection popped it in the car and took it home WITH A MASSIVE GRIN ON MY FACE :D I didn't even know of Dave Marsh back then but I did know about 653.
So I knew it was going to need a paint job and after a few weeks (well nearly 4 to be exact  ) I when for an Emerald Metalic Green and took the frame to Harry Perry's to get it painted….

I only noticed after I'd got it back from the painter it had a full Cinelli lug set as well

So the plan for this was to use the 600 Ultegra group set off the perry and build this up. But as we all know plans change and so this plan changed on my Birthday when my brother gave me a DA7403 rear mech as a birthday present and I treated myself to a set of red mavic MA3s. It tock nearly another 6 months to amass all the other parts as well as a set of NOS michelin giro d italia's

I also splashed out for a NOS cinelli XA stem one of the best bits was sourcing the water bottles from a LBS for a £ a piece I just happened on them by chance (it seems to be a theme with me) and I guess the hardest parts to find were the seat post which came from Germany and the hubs which came from Japan (I ended up buying a complete set of wheels :face palm: ) So wheel built parts assembled it was time to build

hope you like it :)

Looks lovely!
Not 100% sure on the tyres but they do work overall. Its a lovely frame and your build looks perfect for it.
Really nice.
