Damaged BB thread

Hello there,

I discovered to my horror yesterday that the thread on one side of the bottom bracket tube on my current project is damaged, and will not let me screw in the BB cup.

It does not look too bad, and I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions.

Can this be "re-cut" with a tap/die, or need to be taklen to the bike shop? I can't afford to write it off!!

with luck you ought to be able to re-cut it with the correct size tap. However you may find it hard to find any one but a frame builder who has such a thing. Its a bit large and specific for your average engineer in a shed to have.

thanks guys, I already have an NOS S-Works direct drive titanium BB that I want to use and cost me

Does anyone on here have one of these tools? I will try a frame builder if I can't find someone to do it for me on here or locally.

Cheers
Tim

We have a BB rethreading tool tool in our workshop, shame it's the other side of the country.

Maybe your LBS has one, worth a few phone calls (if we have one in our cheapass shop then you should be able to find one!).

I'd have thought a bike decent shop should have one for cleaning / recutting threads when they replace BBs.

DOH!....beat me to it! :D

Any good bike shop SHOULD have a Park tap. What you need to make sure is that the issue is in the threads and not a dent in the bb shell, if thats the case you might be SOL.

Mad as it seems, HALFORDS , not that I go in much these days, use to have all these tapping tools, whether or not they know how to use them is another matter ..
