DA7700 STI repair

DRGR

Retro Newbie
Hello everyone.

I always thought that once these were gone they were indeed gone. There is some suggestion elsewhere that they can be rescued. Is anyone familiar with someone able to do this?

I ask because I have a 25th anniversary set where the left has gone out to lunch

Re:

It will depend what the damage is. Ian down in the Cycle Centre Penzance had the patience to strip and repair if he could.
Obviously depends why it’s stopped working. Sometimes it’s as simple as a pawl not returning as the grease has gone hard.
What’s the issue with yours.

Re:

Was riding along in big ring. Dropping it to inner got stickier and stickier then eventually it wouldn't drop to inner ring even if I could move the shifter somewhat.

Took it off the bike and removed front cover. Part of some black plastic shroud had disintegrated so I'm assuming its a little piece of this that's got into the pawls.

I'm not talented enough to dismantle further

Re:

They’re probably shut at the moment but maybe ring them after and ask for Ian. If he makes it out alive that is.

STI levers are not as hard to work with, as one would imagine. BUT, the Dura Ace ones are quite different to the Ultegra and 105 and are more difficult (I have worked on them all, but only in 9-speed guise).

There are some interesting videos on Youtube, to help. If you have some knowledge of bike mechanics, take your time, and follow the videos, you might be able to fix it yourself. Just remember, to keep track of how to get back to the previous step where you were - if the next step seems impossible, stop and get a pro to help.

Good luck
