Although it is still clement at the moment, winter in the UK is fast approaching so thought that it might be good to get some kit recommendations, either an article of clothing or a particular brand/model.

I'll start with kneewarmers which for the price (you can get them for £15, sometimes even less) and versatility (extends the temperature range of your favourite shorts) are for me an essential part of a cyclists wardrobe. I've got some Lusso Super Roubaix ones and some Nike knitted ones (for a fiver, why did I not buy more?) and both are very good indeed.

Actually, while we are at it let's throw in armwarmers too, similar price and rationale as above.

Anyone got any recommendations?

Ed,
careful here or you'll end up with an Assos vs Rapha debate which is almost as touchy a subject as Shimano vs Campagnolo, or I suppose given this is Retrobike, merino vs synthetics!

For me, it's an easy one - Castelli!

I picked up some leg warmers, winter socks and overshoes at Aldi a week or two ago. Came to about £20 and all but the overshoes are pretty good quality for the price. If you have one of their shops nearby , its worth popping in as they had a range of other winter kit at cheap prices.

I have some lidl winter tights keep me warm over the winter, might not be as cool as Rahpa but just as warm at under 10% of the price.

Are the Planet X overshoes any good? Need something to stop the wind chill effect whistling through the mesh upper part of my shoes.

The Aldi cycling socks - I've got the short "summer" versions and the longer thicker ones - are really good. They aren't regular lines so you do have to time your visits carefully, but quite often Aldi post their special offers leaflets round the local area, or regular shoppers can pick one up in-store.

Oh, and for leg warmers Nalini are brilliant. Still using the "Professional" ones I bought 10 years ago with no real signs of Nora Batty-esque wrinkling as yet!!

Winter clothing

For base layers - can recommend Sportsdirect.com

they are doing long sleeve Campri thermal under jersey for £7.99 and they do work, especially in winter X races...
Have some good cheap cycling shoes for road and MTB/cross

Another recommendation, non brand specific, is a gilet - use one of those with arm-, knee- or leg-warmers and your wardrobe gets really versatile.
