Cracks in Mavic rims.

It seems to be a slightly common problem for old Mavic rims to crack around the eyelets.
I have a M517 CD on a Hope hub with the funny disk mount axle, unfortunately around the eyelets there are tiny cracks some up to 3-4mm long. Are these safe to ride? Or is there history of them suddenly going?

I rode a 517 for almost a year with 5 or 6 little cracks around the eyelets, plus a spoke broke and I never bothered to replace it. Probably not the best thing to do but it worked.

It isn't really dangerous. I expect it's just about possible to get a wheel somewhere near true with 31 spokes, which is effectively what you've got if the cracks have caused a bulge. Once the bulge is sufficient for the spoke to have minimal tension, you could just take it out and it would make no difference. 31 spokes isn't really a sensible proposition for the long term though.

All the spokes are tight and the wheel is fairly true. At the monent there isn't really a problem wi it apart from the small cracks.

:shock: We don't know quite what lies behind this question!

Do you mean that Mrs Rampage's riding style isn't quite as rampaging as yours and therefore she is unlikely to have mega impacts or place enormous cornering forces on the rim as you would?

If she has a 517CD wheelset, she would obviously need a full M950 XTR groupset as well, to match the colour.

She did have a M950 groupset on it but I sold it! Except for the STI which is now on my bike. Don't worry I will be replacing it with LX which is one above XTR of course.

As for riding style, she might reach speeds of almost 15mph riding along flat fireroads and country lanes.
I'll ask her again if she wants disk brakes and if not I'll just put different wheels on.

Go find double eyeletted rims and save your anguish.

Until my freehub died, i rode a pair ox X517s about one year. Already got them cracked, never took care about them, rode them through all terrain and the cranks did not get larger... so, in my oppinion no problem
