We might be going at the end of May for a couple of days (using up airmiles :D ).

Anybody got any recommendations of what to see with kids (aged 10 + 6) and where would be the cheapest to stay centrally (cheap = youth hostels / premier lodge type things).

Copenhagen cheap is an oxymoron.

But for a couple of days with kids the obvious candidates are

Access from airport to city centre/hotels is easy - use the metro and S-tog train networks.

Maybe post this up in the area group nordic thread too?

If possible, avoid hotels just west of the main station but it's where most of them are unfortunately. It's not the nicest of areas with plenty of drug addicts, sex shops and prostitution.

Not stayed in many hotels in Cph as I lived there!
But hostel in best location is

Near nice beach - good for airport but not walking distance from many attractions.

Last time in Copenhagen we had a ride in the morning then went into town for some lunch on an outside cafe and drunk the very exspensive beer and played spot the minga...we didn't spot any, the women are georgeous..needless to say this may have been influenced by the amount of beer

Tivoli Gardens would be good for families especially in the evening when lots of things are lit up- it's quite expensive to go in but loads to do when there. Take food in to save eating in the expensive cafes.

They have a city bike hire scheme which used to be free for the first hour and as it's a small city you can see quite a lot. The tourist info can provide suggestions.

Eating wise a Smorgasborg is an experience - try the Station buffet for an all inclusive deal ( excluding drinks)

If you have car the road bridge across to Malmo is interesting. last time we were there- a couple of years ago we parked in the suburbs and cycled in on a dircet cyclepath to the centre - interesting modern flats and urban design.

Copenhagen is a great city!

You can also take the train across the Oresund bridge to Malmo. Really cold in that Baltic wind when you come out of the station though.
If you do go to Malmo, just remember it's a different currency - Swedish Krone, not Danish! We forgot!!

Copenhagen is expensive, but we didn't find that much to do TBH. Then again, we didn't do much research.
We did visit the hippy commune at Christiania - that was quite interesting (and also quite safe for the family!).
Just make sure you take plenty of cash for food/drinks.
