Clear coat on top of raw steel?

I'm in the planning stages of getting another steel frame welded up and would like to keep it raw afterwards, does anyone know of any problems applying lacquer to raw steel frames please? Going a bit further I wouldn't mind a red flip pearlescent coat will this work?

it will work but be very brittle. best bet would be clear powder coat.

try your steel suppliers
they sometimes apply a coating to steel channel etc that seems quite
hard wearing

have a look at what the vw/hot rod dudes use in their rat rods
