Chromed P7 - Has it been done?

Right guy's, I need some help.

After looking at the projects here I've decided last night that the P7 needs to be turned into a little project. It's not for sale and I'll take it down later.

I'll post some images in a bit. Last night I had to strip the bars and remove the weird headset and home made stem converter thing.

I'm going to look in to getting it powder coated is it safe to get it blasted first? If not, what is the best way for me to prep the frame?

What's wrong with the Nickel plate finish it has?

From the photos I saw it looked mint, did they not tell the whole story? :?

If you change your mind and decide that the frame really is too small for you, selling it will be a doddle if you keep that nickel finish. Otherwise, you might struggle to find buyers....

Due to Nickel's allergenic nature it's hard to find someone in Europe (*) that does nickel-plating on a 'small' scale - that kinda firm you can walk into with a bikeframe that is...

(*) as with most things in EC, if it's the least bit dangerous, we'll slap you with insanely though rules & horrendous taxes driving you out of business - as long as it's not alcohol or tobacco, then we just slap you with the taxes...

Argos Cycles will do it:

The photo's looked great. the frame is OK but it looks like it's missing all the plating from the frame - the forks have it and are a completley different shade.

I toyed with the idea of just selling it and buying a new bike off the shelf but an insurance claim on a broken camera is just about to pay out and I found two old frames and a pair or Rock Shox Judy SL's that i though I could sell here to fund it.

The only reason I thought about chroming it is I could get it done free (just for beer). Then I read about powder coating on here and how cheap it is. I had a colour in mind too. Am going to pop down the powder coaters later to see what they have to say.
There are a couple of teeny tiny dings in the top tube - litterally the size of a pen nib - is it worth filling these?

What I need first though is a crank puller and a new 1 inch headset. That was something else the photos lied about... See if you can spot what it was...

Chroming is cool but is very brittle and is so sensitive to the finish on the frame, if the frame is rough then the chroming will exagerate it. If your frame has dings or dents then it may be worth filling them if you're going to get it chromed as the light shining on the frame will really show them up where as it won't with Powder coating.

If it's free then why not! If it looks bad then you can get the whole thing powder coated (in fact chrome under paint was what may early MTB companies used to use). It will certainly be unique. Although bear in mind that a number of really cheap early MTBs had the full chrome treatment so the build would have to be good so it didn't look like a £99 special!

What lies are in the photo for the headset. I can see nothing wrong.
There are a few things like odd cable routing but that's easy to sort.

Forks do look a shade different to the frame but that could just be tainting of the nickel finish or bought like that.

Normal threaded headset used, and the commonly used aheadset connection with a 1/8" new stem fitted.?

Do you still have the black judy looking forks and the nice looking ritchey silver stem ?

That all makes perfect sense. Off to the chroming place now to see what they say.
