Chris King help please

Once again I’m out of my depth and needing help! My friend has asked me to change his forks from his Orange P7 to some Kona Project 2. The fork just had a nylon washer between it and the bottom cup, these seem to have a race built in? Any help will be massively appreciated. IMG_1982.webp IMG_1985.webp

Which forks are you referring to in your third sentence? The black forks seem to have a crown race that does not match the CK headset, while the CK crown race on the suspension forks has seen better days..

Both fork have removable races. The headset on the P2 forks has a different race to the CK headset. The CK races are hard/harder to remove than the ones on the P2 as they are flush. They definitely can be swapped over I did similar this week.

The suspension forks are the ones I have removed as they are shot, the black Kona forks are the ones I want to fit, so it’s possible to swap the races? I can’t even see a gap between them and the fork! I really need glasses!

You can gently tap a Stanley knife blade in between the crown race and the fork to open up a gap to enable you to something more substantial in there.

Its not a nice way to do it, but its one way of doing it if you don't have the correct tools

As above, depending on how accessible the crown race is, you can either tap it up and out of the way with a flat bladed screwdriver and hammer, if there's nothing to hit, you may need to use a Stanley blade or similar to start the process, moving it up slightly until you can get something more substantial in there to lift it up and out.

You'll also need something to fit the race back on, I would not recommend a screwdriver and hammer for this as you could easily damage it. You can use plastic pipe of the correct diameter over the steerer tube. If you've not got anything I have found you can use a spanner with a larger diameter than the important part/lip of the crown race, but you have to be accurate and gentle.

Best to have the right tool of course.
