First up, does the plastic ‘scuff washer’ serve any purpose other than protecting the top cap from getting scuffed by the headset spacers / stem ?

Secondly, I know the bearings are sealed, but is it good practice to pack the void between the crown race and bottom cup and the void between the top cup and top cap with grease during assembly ? If nothing else this should provide a bit more protection for the bearing by delaying water / mud etc from reaching the bearing seal ?

Cheers for any input :D

The scuff washer is just that fella, a scuff washer to protect the surfaces from getting scored/damaged..

I've owned chris king headsets for years and never added grease to there headsets.. but as you say I suppose it may stop the ingress of dirt into the bearing surfaces..

Not really relating to the maintenance of their headsets however,, a quick look on the CK website :

We do not recommend for or against the application of grease, antisieze, or Loc Tite while pressing in cups with a proper fit – we leave this choise to the discretion of the mechanic installing the headset.

Cant find anything ,, to the appiication of grease to the headset races however.. hmm..

Edit.. additionally info ...

Maintenance
Chris King headsets are designed
to provide the maximum life of any
headset with a minimum of mainte-
nance. Besides an occasional adjust-
ment, the only service necessary is
an occasional cleaning and regreas-
ing of the bearings. Riding conditions
will dictate how often to service your
headset. In wet conditions, service
may be necessary as often as every
6 months; in dry conditions, up to
every 5 years.

Hope this helps..

Yeah, no mention of it in the destructions either :?

I will be anti seizing the frame / cups before fitment though :D

I think the scuff washer might prevent some creaking that may occur as well. Not packed any additional grease when I've installed.

The 'scuff washer' is to prevent creaking - goes on top of the top race. If anyone has any spare washers I will gladly receive them as all three of my headsets are minus them. Thanks :D

i'd just put a light coating of anti seize in the head tube before pressing , wipe excess off , small coating inside cup , between cup and bearn , kings use stainless bearns so will last for many years , don't pack it out it with grease , doesn't need it

loads of grease and little dust = crunch
