children - and cycling on the pavement

While adults are not allowed to cycle on 'footways', children up to the age of 16 cannot be prosecuted for doing so.

Do you live in a town or countryside? I ride from our village with the kids down a footpath through a very quiet farm yard rather than down the country lane. No hassles, no problems. Most people see you have kids and just accept it.
I bet the miserable old sod sits indoors moaning about the youth causing trouble, playing video games and being obease. A Dad is spending time with his kids and they are out getting excercse. How can that be wrong.

I don't recall ever riding on a pavement since, and if I'm walking on a pavement I won't get off it just because someone's riding a bike on it - although to be fair they're usually a bit older than five.
IMHO, I think kids riding on the pavement is fine, if they are riding sensibly, but adults (unless supervising their young children) must ride on the road. Those that don't are generally inconsiderate idiots who get in peoples way and give the rest of us a bad name.

Whatever the law says as adults I don't think you should ride on the pavement (unless it's a proper cycle path), but kids under say (rather arbitrarily) 12 should be able to. However if said kids present a danger to pedestrians because of their riding (un)ability then they should be made to walk until such a time as they can ride carefully on the pavement. Common sense approach really.

I make my children cycle on the pavement if unsupervised & I cycle on the pavement to supervise my 5 year old as I could not keep up walking. I am considerate and stop if the path is narrow to let pedestrians pass. No one seems to mind here and I cycle on the road when on my own.
My understanding was 12 or under could use the pavements legally supervised or not. Sadly most modern drivers are not aware enough to spot adults cyclists on the road never mind small kids.
after being asaulted for riding on a cycal path it seems that eveyone has their own version of the law that suits them and the police seem to have that veiw too.

Your child's safety is paramount- there are always those who want to make a point, deliberately walking into a small child says something about this person. Obviously believes Victor Meldrew is a good role model. In my house we call them MOGs ( Miserable Old Gits)
