Chainset ratios

I'm tempted to build up a nice looking chainset at the mo', but the middle ring is looking like being a 32tooth.

This leaves me with a 24/32/48 ratio!!

Is this just stupid or what, or can i make it work?

Fraid i probably won't find a 36 or 38tooth ring in the brand i want, and so i would have to look to another brand to supply the middle ring, which i want to avoid if i can.....

The cassette is likely to be 12-28 or 13-30 i guess.

Any thoughts?

Drew :)

I generally don't like to jump more than 12 teeth, I think it causes problems shifting up but it might be different with ramped or pinned rings.

I used to run 26 38 50, I currently run 26 38 46 but think I would now prefer 24 36 48

It may pose problems for front Mechs designed for compact chainsets.

Personally I don't see the need for such a large step? Nor the need for a granny ring in most current gear set ups.

You might also get problems finding a rear mech that can wrap and tension all that chain. 48/11 is a pretty huge gear - the sort of thing the biggest pro road sprinters and TT riders use.

If you have a standard ATB chainset then 32 won't fit (34 is the smallest middle). It's also worth remembering that for good front shifting the middle-big tooth difference should be no larger (and ideally smaller) than the small-middle difference.

48/11 is pretty tall for a mtb. Most sprinters would be on a 53/11.
