chain wear

hi,

Is there a simple method of checking a chain to determine chain wear?

BITD I remember measuring the distance between 8 pins or something like that, the LBS had a special measuring device for this,

its an 8 speed chain if that helps

also do single speed setups wear the chain more than normal geared setups?

thanks

I've used a Rohloff chain wear tool since the early nineties.

SS should wear the chain less as it doesn't see the angles. My Kona SS has been running the same SEDIS chain for 5 years with no wear - I've had the chain since 1994 but only installed it 5 years ago, I have no idea what model it is but if I could clone it I would.

I've found BMX SS chains to be rubbish - Sachs PC7X lose rollers which is really annoying.
I'm having good success with the Wipperman Connex Intrax 708 on my Nicolai Rohloff bike which seems to eat normal chains.

BITD, I was taught to put it in the big ring, lift the chain of the ring, and if you could reveal a whole chainring tooth you chain is worn out, any less and your ok.

12 full links = 12" on a new chain.

If the chain has stretched by 1/16" (over 12 full links) it's nearly time to buy a new one.

If the chain has stretched by 1/8" (over 12 full links) buy as new chain & have a good look at your other drivetrain components for wear.

Or buy a chain checker ;)
