Chain slack

Dirt Disciple
Hi

I am building up my bike and have installed a new chain. I have measured it as using the info from Park Tools, big ring to big sprocket and add 2 links.

As you can see from the pictures when the chain is on small and small it is very loose but on big and big there wouldn't really be any room to remove any links.

I have an XT groupset M730.

Does anyone have any info on the potential fixes.

Thanks.

Re:

Check that the pivots on the rear mech move freely.
I would think one, or both of them are starting to stick.

What the other guy said...check the springs aren't all gummed up and are free to give the proper tension...and also not to teach one to suck eggs...that's not a 34t cassette or anything crazy..some of those were 12-28/12-32 max

i thought you put chain on small sprocket - big chain ring then connect chain. should never run big to big or small to small.?

Again

Why would anyone EVER run it small small???

It's for measurement purposes only: big-big + 2 links but without running the chain through the rear mech. Installation: I usually use small-small (but through the rear mech. obviously) when installing since the chain is easier to work with when there's least tension, but it's set to a sensible gear before riding. But installation is the only time it will be cross chained. Cross chaining is a bad thing.

That looks like a medium or short cage mech, for the sprockets you are using, you need the long cage version.

Re:

Thanks for the replies.
All the pivots seem to be free and have spring tension, I'm running a 12/28 cassette and took the entire drivetrain off another bike which seemed to be ok, the only thing I've done is add a new chain.

I wouldn't run small/small or big/big but something isn't right with that amount of slack although the bike does seem to ride ok through the normal range of gears.
