Cassette Compatability

Hi,, Would I be right in thinking that I can't replace a 7 seven speed cassette with a 9 speed?

All help much appreciated and thanks in advance.

correct buddy, you can't sizes are different, 8/9 you can swap, but you can't do 7/8

your freehub on the 7spd hub will be too short.

But

You can replace a 7spd freehub body with a 9spd, they are just about all compatible but you would need to re-dish the wheel and adjust the axle spacers so it all fits nice.

A good way to extend the life of old hubs.

plenty of 7spd cassettes still available though.

My usual line:

Buy a 9-speed 11-32 cassette, throw away the 11t cog, and fit the remaining 8 sprockets to your 7-speed hub. Works like a charm. You'll need a 9-speed chain and shifter, and a 12t-compatible lockring.
