Carbon Bars and Barends question

Can Barends be fitted to Carbon Fibre flat bars ?

If so do they need to be a special type or can my old onza's go back on.

Cheers

yes if you really must.... you'll need to put a metal insert inside to stop the clamp crushing the carbon.

Easton advise that only bar ends where the clamping slot is radial to the bar should use. Most bar ends I've seen have this radial slot, and I can't think of any specific examples which don't - but they must exist or else the warning wouldn't be there!

Echo the comments below about metal reinforcements, though I'm not sure where you'd get them from these days! Some carbon bars have reinforced ends to make them bar-ens safe, but eg Easton EC99 flat bars don't, not even the latest CNT model. Syntace offer a range:

no idea who the UK distributor is though.

One possibility is the Ergon grips with built-in bar ends, which use a Lock-On grip style clamping system so in theory should be safer. You may not like the look of them, but they're very comfortable:

Those grips are really amazing. One of my mate's got some and I had a ride of his bike. I've got some on order now.

The Specialized Thermo plastic bars come with BERTS (Bar-End Reinforcement ThingS) built in, never had any problems with mine.
