c'mon, how do you transport your bikes?

on my last estate i had a towbar amd towbar bike rack, still got the rack but never fitted a bar to the rs. new vw has roof bars so im after/getting a roof mounted system and wondered how people found them?

upto this, ive just thrown them in the boot lol

pics please, and honest opinions on roof bike racks

:D

In the van I strap them in fairly loosely with foam rubber between them.

MPV I kind of 'throw' them in, same with the 4x4.

Have been looking at a rack for the spare wheel carrier, it can take a lot of weight, but been way too busy lately.

Lots of the parking areas are height restricted so I tend to avoid the roof borne options.

Best for me yet is the Thule 591 roof system , so easy and effortless ESP carrying say 3 muddy bikes and people.

BUT

If say I am doing distance on my own tend to put in car as its quite a drag I find on the car and mpg, also security at services etc.

Don't get the cheaper halfords option they have the claws of death clamping on your frames.

Had a ball mounted thule too , didnt like the bikes mounted so close together

Another one for the Thule 591 proride roof carriers.

Very easy to use and very well made.

roof and tow hitch racks not an option for me.....i settled this week on a saris bones 3 rack.......im yet to use it but it looks the buisness.....will keep you updated

In addition to a towbar rack I also have a San Remo roof bar system using the clamp on the front dropout, which I have always found very secure. I'm not sure you can use it with some carbon road forks though.

Yes I use the Volkswagen Passat Estate "internal" cycle carrying system, really easy to use you only have to lift one door and remove your front wheel.

Saying that I actually did by a cheapy halford one and it went from Brum to France, Switzerland and Germany over the space of a month carried 2 bikes and didn't fail me or leave a scratch so ......
