Got a problem that's recently just started to happen and that is when driving along above about 3000 rpm the revs shoot up with not speed increase. It's like it suddenly it isn't in gear. I got it to happen on 2nd-5th, havent tried 1st. Going to drop it in to a garage on Monday but before I do does anyone have any idea what's gone wrong? Is it clutch issue or gearbox possibly?

Matt

Sounds like a slipping clutch, can check by parking up and try pulling away with handbrake on, if it's slipping the revs will rise, if clutch is ok you'll hear the revs drop as the transmission loads up, BTW does the Rev counter just flick up and back down without you adjusting the throttle position.

What car is it? Could MAF sensor or turbo if TDI type engine.

Edit. If no speed increase sounds like clutch.

Re:

Its a petrol 05-10 Suzuki Swift. Its stalls quickly if pull away in 3rd but will try handbrake. Seems OK below 3000, so at least can drive until book a check up.

If the engine speed increases but speed does not then is got to be clutch ( it is a manual right?)

How many miles done on the clutch?

If it is cable operated clutch, is the cable adjusted correctly?

Re:

Coming up to 45k, yes its a manual. Started last week when pootling long on the motorway about 80 (on the way to collect a bike). Then when I tried to replicate on the way home via a dual carriageway all ok, thought I imagined it until I was on said carriage going in to town. Then I managed to get it to happen in all the gears when I went back home via lesser roads. Below 3000 it seems OK, but least I can driver it so getting it to the garage should be OK.

Re:

I spoke to a Nissan Garage (they're just aound the corner from where I work), they confirmed it was the clutch and they quoted just over 600 quid (340 quid for labour) So then I spoke to a work colleague who knows someone and they've quoted just over 220 quid. So you know who i'm going with, and plus I'm asking them to do a service as I had a price of about 400 quid in mind and its close to its next one anyway.

Re:

I've had some bad news from the garage, they've taken the casing off to get at the clutch and discovered that there is an oil leak coming on from the gear box (which was causing the slipping). They asked if I've had the gearbox out recently as they think the seal could have been damaged at that time, which i did have back in February for something that was repaired under warranty at the dealership. This could possibly result in a large bill. Do I have a leg to stand on in claiming the dealership could have caused this?
